Understanding Adult ADHD and How It's Diagnosed

Adult ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that begins in childhood and can continue into adult life, affecting concentration, organisation, impulsivity, and everyday functioning. While it affects around 3 to 4% of adults, many people remain undiagnosed because symptoms can be mistaken for stress, anxiety, or personality traits. At IamPsychiatry, we understand that ADHD can present differently for each person, with symptoms commonly grouped into inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, or combined presentations.

As part of your private ADHD assessment at IamPsychiatry, Dr Iqbal Mohiuddin will complete a detailed clinical evaluation of your current symptoms and childhood history. Under UK diagnostic guidelines, ADHD symptoms must have been present during childhood for a diagnosis to be confirmed. If early experiences are unclear, school reports or information from parents, relatives, teachers, or others who knew you as a child may support the assessment. A diagnosis also considers how symptoms affect areas such as education, work, driving, friendships, and personal relationships.

Dr Iqbal was thorough, methodical and compassionate in his assessment. It’s wonderful having someone like him to help navigate issues that have so much personal and emotional import. Having an ADHD specialist who has experience in navigating both the NHS and the private healthcare spheres is invaluable as well. He truly cares about what is best for you as an individual patient. Couldn’t recommend enough.

Recognising the Signs of Adult ADHD

The symptoms of adult ADHD can affect many aspects of everyday life, making routine tasks more difficult than they should be. Many adults experience ongoing challenges with attention, organisation, emotional regulation, and impulsive behaviour, often without realising that ADHD is the underlying cause. Taking an ADHD test can be a helpful first step in identifying whether a full private assessment is appropriate.

Common symptoms include difficulty concentrating, poor attention to detail, starting tasks without finishing them, disorganisation, forgetfulness, frequently losing belongings, and struggling to prioritise. Some people also experience restlessness, impatience, mood swings, irritability, interrupting conversations, speaking impulsively, difficulty managing stress, or taking unnecessary risks. Following a comprehensive assessment, treatment may include practical strategies, psychological support, and ADHD medication where clinically appropriate. Identifying these patterns through a professional assessment is an important first step towards appropriate treatment and long-term support.
